Why is Pureland Reiki different from Reiki as it is taught by most Reiki Masters?

 

We have restored the original esoteric teachings to Reiki.

 

It has nothing to do with new or extra symbols. Nothing different about the initiation technique we use. Nothing to do with spirits or magic. What is different is our attitude and direction in life. We are not teaching a new system. We are doing our best to present Reiki as something Sensei Usui would recognise as Reiki.

 

We have called ourselves Pureland Reiki because the Five Precepts of Reiki come from Pureland Buddhism, and we have been receiving Choiceless Awareness instruction from a living master who comes from the Pureland lineage. It is this awareness practice, combined with Japanese energy movement techniques, which sets Pureland Reiki apart. 

 

We often use the term “Japanese Reiki” to distinguish ourselves from Western Reiki, much of which has lost credibility. This is largely due to lack of genuine esoteric teaching. We find many poor quality teachers who are ill informed and lack knowledge of authentic traditional transformation techniques.

 

Many Reiki Masters claim that they are teaching “Traditional Reiki” or “Original Reiki,” however if you do your own research, you will find that these teachings are not as original as claimed. Bear in mind most Asian teachers, including many Japanese teachers, were taught by Westerners. We are not saying that Westerners make poor teachers, we are saying that many Western Reiki teachers have limited their study, blindly accepting teachings of ill-informed masters, and often mixing traditions they do not fully understand.

 

One example is “Chakra Healing.” The Chakra system is an Indian Tantric structure, and there is not one mention of the use of Chakra healing in Usui Sensei’s original handbook. This system was developed as a vehicle for self-transformation and enlightenment. It is a means to heal oneself, and not a means to heal others. You can't actually heal someone else's chakras. Also, on a side note, Chakras are not located in the front of the body where most Western practitioners believe them to be located. Incidentally, “Chakra Healing” started appearing in Reiki teaching in the 1970’s, when “Chakras” became a trendy concept which has been widely misunderstood.

People’s enthusiasm for Reiki often stems from the possibility to undertake a weekend training course and call themselves a Reiki Master. Any other discipline which offered the same would be discredited, and yet somehow people within the Reiki world accept this. We do not!

Our training courses are very thorough, but can only give you the tools from which to begin to learn this art. Level One and Two basics are taught in a few days each. Level Three takes longer; however to master these techniques and become a competent Reiki therapist will take you years of self-development along with actual therapy practice with genuinely sick people. We insist that our students spend years working with Reiki before even considering becoming a Reiki Master Teacher. To teach this level in a satisfactory way takes a month just to learn the basics. At this level we teach genuine esoteric techniques to transform oneself, which you will not find in any book.

At Pureland Reiki we have a strong focus upon developing our students through meditation, energy and breath work as originally taught by the Japanese masters who founded this intuitive art. We teach meditation techniques which develop mindfulness and awareness.  Reiki should involve the development of the student’s energy centers, especially the lower, middle and upper Dan Tien. This builds greater amounts of Ki and intuitive insight.

 

We focus on practical aspects of energy healing, also intuitive energy sensing techniques such as Byosen. We prepare our students thoroughly, helping them to achieve deep insight into people’s physical, emotional and psychological blockages. Each student is tested, which builds experience and confidence.

 

We have criteria which must be met before a student is allowed to progress to higher levels of practice, such as: the ability to feel pain in another body; the ability to sense or intuit the cause of pain; the ability to see or feel another’s emotions; being able to demonstrate genuine psychic ability; movement of energy; spiritual maturity. (To date, all of the students who have been through our courses have progressed to their desired levels; we provide extra help and guidance for those students who initially have difficulty accessing their own psychic and sentitive nature.)

 

We teach our students to drop ideas of “channeling energy,” or of being a “Healer.” We drop erroneous beliefs that we must visualize or heal chakras. When we drop all the mental clutter, we create space for something wonderful to happen. Some call this being present, being conscious, being aware or being silent in the mind. In this state, deep insight and healing can happen naturally.

 

We have insight, experience and spiritual practices gained from travelling and living in Asia for the past twenty years. We have learnt from spiritual masters who have devoted decades of practice to Buddhist meditation, Kriya Yoga, Tantra, Qi Gong and Reiki. Some of our toughest teachers have been students and patients.

 

A Pureland Reiki treatment involves placing hands on people in a state of mindfulness. In this state, Reiki or Shen energy manifests. Shen / Reiki is the energy associated with high states of consciousness, as known by practitioners of Tai Chi, Qi Gong, Falun Gong and Kikko.

 

We are meditators who practice self-inquiry through awareness. Being fully present with people is an act of love and devotion.
